Legg Lake & San Gabriel River
Saturday, February 4, 2012
7:30 am - 11:30 amThis trip will cover several consistently good lake and park birding areas. Legg Lake has lots of water and scattered trees and has produced good waterfowl numbers and varieties as well as an impressive list of migrants and wintering birds. Peck Road Park contains a huge hourglass-shaped lake that often hosts a wide variety of water birds, including grebes, ducks, gulls, terns, egrets, and shorebirds. Time permitting: we'll include the Pico Rivera spreading grounds or some other river locations, based on what's around. An excellent trip for begining and young birders.
Meet in the Santa Anita Ave. parking lot, closest to the 60 freeway. Take the Santa Anita exit and turn south from the off-ramp (going south). The lake and parking lot will be on your right

Santa Fe Dam
Saturday, February 25, 2012
7:30am - noonSanta Fe Dam hosts an interesting variety of habitats, including a lake, coastal sage scrub, grassy areas, and a park. This attracts many wintering birds as well as local residents. Waterfowl, Loggerhead Shrike, White-tailed Kite, Rock Wren, and wintering warblers are often found.
Take Irwindale Ave. south 1.5 miles from the 210 Freeway and turn right on Arrow Highway and watch for the park sign and entrance on your right in half a mile. After paying the entry fee at the kiosk, continue straight through the intersection at the bottom of the hill. Turn left into the parking lot closest to the northeast corner of the lake, where we will meet.

Quail Lake and Northwest L.A. County
Saturday, March 10, 2012
7:30 am - afternoon
For those doing a Wrentit Club list, this trip will get us to the extreme northwest corner of Los Angeles County. We should have a good selection of waterbirds and other winter visitors. Along with possible Bald and Golden Eagles, there have been a Rough-Legged Hawk and White-winged Scoter hanging about this winter. We will meet at Quail Lake, then proceed to other hot spots in the area.
Meet in the parking lot at the west end of Quail Lake at 7:30 am. To get there, take the I-5 Freeway north, then take the Hwy 138 off-ramp east for about a mile. Quail Lake is on your left. Bring food, water, wand warm clothes along with your optics (scopes are recommended if you got one). It takes about 1.5 hours to get to Quail Lake from Pasadena, so please don't drive alone. Also keep in mind that there are very few gas stations in the area.

Orange County: First Migrants
Saturday, March 24, 2012
7:00 am - noon
Coastal Orange County holds some of the best known migrant traps in Southern California. Though March is not the time to be searching for vagrants, it is the time to witness the "changing of the guard" as wintering birds are replaced by migrants and summer arrivals. It is a time of great avian diversity and excitement as we welcome back species we haven't seen since they left in the fall. Come along as we visit Huntington Central Park, Mile Square Park, and Mason Regional Park to see what's dropped in.
Meet at the parking lot for Huntington Central Park on the east side of Goldenwest Street near the Park Bench Cafe.

Tejon Ranch!
Saturday, April 14, 2012
8:00 am - afternoon
We have an exciting opportunity to visit the Tejon Ranch. The Ranch, at 422 contiguous square miles, is the largest piece of privately held property in California. The Ranch also came to an agreement with major environmental organizations (including the National Audubon Society) regarding conservation and development. You can visit www.TejonRanch.com for more information.
A quick eBird check for the Ranch lists California Condor, Burrowing Owl, Lewis's Woodpecker, Scott's Oriole, and Lawrence's Goldfinch among the many species we may see that day.
The Ranch is private property and is only open for visits by reservation. If you would like to visit the Ranch on this trip, please send an email to ron@cyger.org with the following information for each person: Name, Address, Telephone Number, and Email Address. I will then send further information on meeting place, time, etc.
Trip size will be limited and is open to Pasadena Audubon members only. Hope to see you at the Ranch!
